THE NEW SOUTH

Economic Diversification
The South was an agricultural based economy , new ideals emerged and the once cotton monopoly would no longer be the sole basis of the whole southern economy. Educators enlightened people as to how best utilize the rich southern soil, to be able to produce many products. Miners became in demand because mining was a flourishing business.
-Seaman A Knapp , demonstrated how to use soil more efficiently
-Southern Intellectual demanded a more diversified economy
-Coal was produced by the millions and was a newly found energy source

Political Changer
Local Southern leaders called bourbons , were democrats whom wanted to once again oppress blacks. The southern blacks looked for leaders to be their advocates. Blacks emerged in congress for the first time. The overall worth of education was elevated.
-Several black politicians emerge as new formed leaders, GA and SC had black representatives
-London banker George Peabody, in vests 3 million in public school systems.
-J.LM Curry established programs that helped increase literacy in whites by 88 , ad 50 percent in blacks

Race Relations
The Southern blacks were disenfranchised, voting requirements were made in order to prevent any suffrage guaranteed under the 14th amendment. The 15th amendment was not violated but ways around it were found where the newly freed slaves were not illegible to their civil rights. Whites wanted to remain the upper hand and not harmonize or ameliorate problems with the entire black race.
-Grandfather Clause, literacy tests.
-Plessy vs. Ferguson, supreme court established segregation as an acceptable practice among other principles which the south would accept.
